St-Viateur Bagel - I just couldn't figure out what the big deal was; the bagels were probably awesome if you could bring them home and toast them.  Since we're tourists; we didn't like that they did not toast or prepare the bagel for you.  You have to buy the bagels and the cream cheese separately and then prepare it yourself.

East Coast Canada Trip

2016

Ottawa, Ontario

This trip was to visit a dear friend of ours that moved to Ottawa for love.  We haven't seen her in over 8 months so we wanted to go visit her. When we started planning our trip, the Canadian dollar was not doing well against the US so we decided not going South.  We figured since we always wanted to check out the East Coast of Canada; this was our chance.  We were able to get away for 12 days so we hit up as many spots in the East Coast that we could.  These are the chronicles of our trip and the places to visit that made sense logistically.
Arrival Night
We took the red eye with WJ to Ottawa which arrives at midnight.  When we got there; we were starving so we found a pho restaurant  (New Pho Bo Ga LA) in Chinatown that was open until 4am.  The food was decent and the restaurant was pretty busy in the middle of the night.  We found this restaurant by checking yelp and picked the restaurant with the best reviews.
Day 1
We wanted to try out The SconeWitch because I have weakness for scones especially Devonshire cream.  The reviews were also great for this chain so it a must try for me.  We got there early in the morning and opted to tried the salmon and the tuna sconewitches for our main breakfast.  The fish was fresh and the sconewitch was very refreshing.  For a sweet dessert scone; we tried the vanilla scone with the devonshire cream.  These were some of the best scones I've ever had.  They were not too sweet and it was rich and decadent. If you enjoy scones; you will love this place.  It was so great; I went to this place twice during our short trip.
Our top priority when we are travelling is to find a great cup of joe.  This was easy for Ottawa because they have this great coffee chain which is Bridgehead.  The regular brew coffee is fantastic. My husband really enjoyed the Americano.  We had this coffee a few times a day. Highly recommend if it you want to try out a local coffee that is also organic.

Byward Market – This is the main market in Ottawa.  The market was filled with small shops selling local knick-knacks, lots of food stalls, restaurants, pubs and a shopping mall in the area.  It was big mall and they opened some newer stores; Simons, Saks Off Fifth Avenue and Anthropologie.
Royal Canadian Mint – We did this tour not realizing this is not where Canadian money is made.   The Canadian mint makes collectors coins, investor coins and medals.  The Bank of Canada makes the Canadian dollar bills and Canadian coins are made in Winnipeg.
Parliament Hill & Buildings – This was a beautiful place to take pictures.  There are a lot of beautiful historical buildings and the parks are all beautiful.
At 9pm; there was a light show at the parliament building; I think this is seasonal
Notre Dame – We did not go inside because there was a wedding going on; the outside was beautiful.
For dinner we made a reservation at Beckta Dining & Wine which is the same owners as the restaurant Play.  We went here with a group of 5 people.  Our party had a few food allergies which the restaurant was excellent at accommodating. They gave us a private room upstairs for dinner.  For next time, we  would ask to be seated in the main dining rooms on the main floor.  They have a very large wine and cocktail menu.  We ordered a few cocktails and everyone enjoyed their choice.  We went with the three course dinner.  Everyone was able to pick their choices for dinner rather than the tasting menu.  The course menu had enough selection to satisfy any palate.  Everyone really enjoyed their dinner.  The only thing we wouldn't order again was the rice pudding which the server did inform us that either people liked it or didn't.  The service for the evening was impeccable.
Day 2
Rideau Canal – The canal is very serene and peaceful and we were fortunate enough to walk along the paths a few times during our stay.   My husband enjoys morning jogs on vacation and he really enjoyed running along the canal.  It was so nice that I decided to join him on our last day there for a run.  If you have the time; I highly recommend it.
We tried to Wilf & Aida's for breakfast but it was a 2 hour + wait so we walked further down the street and tried Erling's Variety. It was a busy brunch spot and the food was just okay.   I read a lot of reviews and I was happy we ran into Moo Shu Ice Cream & Kitchen on our way to Wilf & Ada's.  We had the hong kong style milk tea and the sesame.  Everyone really enjoyed their ice cream and would recommend this place.  They also make fresh waffle cones.
My husband really enjoys Mill Street Organic Lager so we had to check out the Mill Street Brewery for an early dinner.  We didn't make a reservation and we were able to grab a table for 5 around 6pm for dinner on the patio.  There are free tours of the brewery every hour.  If they are busy; you should sign up early to ensure you have a spot.  We had a craving late at night so we went to Datsun (restaurant was full) and ordered some Bao in the takeout window. They were pretty decent. A lot of people ordered the spicy noodles. We will have to try that next time.
Day 3
Sussex Drive – We drove by the Prime Minister of Canada's house which is currently Justin Trudeau – it was on a hill; all of the houses in the area were amazing.  It's worth a drive around the area if you have a good weather day; there is a lot of embassy/consulate houses in the area as well.
Gatineau, Quebec – if you have the time, we highly recommend crossing the bridge to be able to capture some lovely pictures of Ottawa.
We wanted our last night to be chill so we opted to go to Lieutenant's Pump pub for dinner.  The menu had a lot of variety  and a huge drink menu; like pages and pages for beer, liquor, cocktails.  The pub had multiple rooms; its definitely a place to check if you enjoy pubs.  The blackened chicken dish can be made gluten-free.
Day 4
We had a flight later in the afternoon to head towards to Newfoundland to start our East Coast trip so we had time for a late lunch before we departed.
I ran out of time during the trip and wasn't able to go to these places but based on my research these spots have some good eats:
El Camino - Corn on the cob and tacos
Sansotei Ramen
The Whalesbone
Stella Luna Gelato
Happy Goat Coffee
The Ministry of Coffee
Nordik Spa - Scandanavian Spa
2016

St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador

My husband and I are avid Costco fans so we always try to hit up a Costco whenever possible on vacation.  We’ve had some good finds and we have on occasion bought stuff home.
St. John’s
We arrived in St.John’s after midnight and we were really hungry when we landed and most places close early in St John’s.  Fortunately, we were able to hunt down a subway that was open for 24 hours on Water Street. There is also a few McDonalds but you had to drive further for them.
Day 5
Mallard Cottage - Super cute rustic place. We had brunch here and we would recommend it.  We are trying to eat healthier but if you are a dessert fan; you should definitely save room for the dessert table. It is $10 to fill a plate with as many goodies as possible.
Signal Hill - This was a little hike but it was worth it because you get a great view of the city.  It reminded me of being in Europe. We got some amazing photographs here.
Cape Spear Lighthouse - Beautiful lighthouse and we got to learn some history while we were there. This place also has some war
Costco - My husband are avid Costco fans so we always try to hit up a Costco whenever possible on vacation.  It's just our thing; we just love Costco and we like to see what other Costco locations have.  We’ve had some good finds and we have on occasion bought stuff home.
Raymond’s  -  This was on a top list of restaurants to try in Canada when I was doing my research.   The price was reasonable for fine dining and we liked that the restaurant uses local ingredients.  The dinner was fantastic. My husband had some food allergies which they were more than happy to accommodate.  We did the five course tasting with the wine pairing since we had a late lunch that day (they also have a seven course tasting).  Each course was very tasty and the wine pairings were really good too.  The wine pairing for our meal reminded us of our experience when we were dining at Alinea in Chicago.  This restaurant is a gem and should be on your must-try list if you are ever in St. John's.
George Street - You can't go to St. John's and not go to George Street. It is well-known as the spot to get drinks and to go to clubs.  We went on a weeknight so it wasn't that busy.  We went to Martini bar and had some good drinks.
Some apparently great spots we weren't able to hit up:

Adelaide Oyster House
the Roos
Quidi Viddis
2016

New Brunswick

 Day 6
Moncton
We drove through here to get to the Bay of Fundy.   If you are hungry; we would recommend grabbing a bite somewhere here but we were driving through too early for anything to be open.
Dieppe
We stopped at a noodle soup restaurant here called Thanh’s Place because it was open earlier.  The food was nothing memorable but we were hungry and it did the trick.
Hopewell Rocks (Flowerpots Rocks) - Bay of Fundy
I had a few people recommend doing this so I did some research and I had no idea this place even existed in Canada. It is one of the few places in the world with the highest tide and where its possible for you to walk the floor of the ocean twice a day.  You get to walk on the ocean floor. How cool is that?  If you come here and depending on how adventurous you are; you might want to bring footwear because it can get muddy.  If you want to see both the high and low tide, you should probably make this a two day trip. We were only there for the low tide to walk the ocean floor and continue on our way to PEI.
Alma’s Lobster
We were hungry after we did the walk on the ocean floor. We looked on Yelp to see if there were any restaurants near by that were good. The closest place with good ratings with Alma's Lobster which was 30 kilometres away.  The food was just alright.  The razor clams were quite good; the lobster was just okay. I wouldn't say it was worth the 30 km drive.
2016

Prince Edward Island

 Day 6
Drive through Charlottetown
Water Prince Corner Store
From Alma it was about a 3 hour drive to Charlottetown and we knew we wouldn’t be able grab dinner near the Inn at Souris since the Inn has a feast each night that starts at 6pm.   We stopped in Charlottetown for dinner at Water Prince Corner store. We got there around 7pm and we were able to get a table outside right away. As soon as we grabbed our seat, there was a line forming.  We ordered the lobster dinner which was very reasonable; It was approximately $53 for a 2 pound lobster, plate of fries and steamed mussels.   We also ordered the steamed clams. Everything was really good and tasted really fresh.  We were too full to have dessert but the table beside us did and they seemed to really enjoy the coconut cream pie.
Bay of Inn Fortune
I do a lot of research about travelling to top food spots in the world and I somehow find out that Chef Michael had purchased the Bay at Inn Fortune with his wife Chastity.   I knew it was going to be on my list of places to go to.  I was fortunate enough to go there and this was one of the reasons we went to PEI.  The Inn is only open from May to October so keep that in mind if you are planning a trip. We had to book our reservations way in advance (May for September stay) since we were worried, the rooms wouldn’t be available during the time period we wanted.   They have a decent refund policy; if they are able to secure another reservation for when you want to cancel, they will then refund you the full amount.  We’ve never been to an Inn like this before so we decided to opt for the fancy room with the 360 degree view of the water, vaulted ceilings, and personal balcony for $400 a night.   This room is on the 3rd floor and if you have any mobility concerns with stairs, you should probably try and a get a room on the main floor.   We thought the $400 room was very reasonable since we were on the top floor, we didn’t have any neighbours so noise wasn’t an issue and the view of the water was beautiful.
We were arriving late and we checked with the Inn; they usually have someone at the desk until 11pm but if you’re arriving later than that, just let them know in advance and they’ll have someone there to check you in.
Day 7
Breakfast - Bay of Inn Fortune
Myriad View Distillery - You can pick up some moonshine here.
Princes Island National Park
Anne of Green Gables
Richards Fresh Seafood
Daves Lobster
Chip Shack
Feast - Bay of Inn Fortune - The feast is $95 and it is worth every penny.  We were staying at the Inn so we get a reserve spot for dinner if we want it. Speaking to the staff at the inn; they indicated there's a two month waiting list to attend the dinner.  They were also excellent with accommodating for food allergies. The dinner starts with oyster hour at 6pm in the lobby area and front porch.  There are food stations around the inn so it lets everyone tour the lovely property.  For our dinner; the food stations were the oyster bar, smoked salmon on a baked cracker, smoked duck wings, pork belly taco and freshly made pork sausage.  The dinner does not include drinks (between $10 to $13) but they have cocktail stations set up before dinner; the drink selection was blackberry vodka fizz, gin and tonic, sangria, beers and wine.  The feast starts at 7:30pm.  There are names on the tables for the seating arrangements.  The dinner started with fresh bread and butter, seafood chowder, smoked halibut, fresh salad, ribeye and dessert which was a pecan tart. There were also a couple palate cleansers.   We also go the wine pairing with the meal which I think was $55 and it was all local.  There was an abundance of food; you will not be leaving this meal hungry.  We were also fortunate to meet Chef Michael Smith; he was shucking the oysters. The stay at the inn and this dinner was one of the highlights of our trip.  Keep an open mind if you dine here; everything is cooked over an open fire meaning its uneven heat. It was extremely impressive they were able to make this amazing meal on an open fire. We will definitely come back here when we're in PEI.
2016

Nova Scotia

Cape Breton
Day 8
Barreck
Alexander Graham Bell National Park - This is a small museum but we found it very cool and we got to learn a few things. We didn't realize he invented other things on top of the telephone.
Cape Breton (should be 2 days)
Cabot Trail - We just drove through in one day. Our next trip, we would stay at a bed and breakfast to be able to enjoy the scenery.  We were also driving through when the weather wasn't nice so the pictures weren't as nice as they could have been.
Skyline Trail – nice hike
Picnic
Lots of lookouts on the trail
Hampton Inn – Sydney
Hotel
We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Sydney since this made the most sense logically for the drive to Halifax the following morning.  The drive from Sydney to Halifax is about 4.5 hours.
What to Do
Hike - Skyline Trail
Cape Breton Drive
Take pictures at the lookouts
2016
Halifax
Day 9
Drive from Sydney to Halifax

Hotel
We stayed at the Westin Nova Scotian.  The hotel was built back in the 1930's so the rooms were quite old and it had this damn odor which bothered us.  We got upgraded to a harbour view room so the view from the room was beautiful if that's your thing. The hotel was in a very good location and we were only there for two nights so it worked for us.  The hotel is right across the street from the farmer's market, a lot of restaurants and other tourist sites are within walking distance.  We probably won't stay here next time; we would look for something a bit newer.
Halifax Boardwalk
We enjoyed walking on the boardwalk and visiting some of the shops.
Bicycle Thief
Make a reservation. This place is considered one of the best restaurants in Halifax.  It is packed and for good reason.  Excellent food and service.  It was chilly when we were there but if its not try to get a table outside to enjoy the view. This restaurant has a beautiful patio that overlooks the water. We were able to get a reservation since we tried for a later dinner.  Everything here was delicious.
Alexander Keith’s
This was a great visit of the oldest brewery in Canada dating back to the 1800s.  They do get busy so stop by to buy tickets in advance if you need to do a tour at a certain time.
Press Gang
Delicious fresh oysters. This restaurant is located in a very beautiful old brick building. We loved the food and the service here. We stopped here for a drink and oysters before dinner.
Two Doors Down
Best smokehouse burger ever. We shared this time because we ate the oysters at Press Gang. We won't share next time.
Halifax Public Gardens
We read great reviews about it but they closed early on the day we were visiting so we didn't get a chance to visit it ourselves.
Chatime
I can't ever say no to bubble tea especially on vacation.
Citadel
A little bit of history; we both enjoyed our educational afternoon here.
Day 10
Peggy’s Cove
This is another lighthouse but this is probably the most popular one on the East Coast. Majority of pictures of lighthouses on the East Coast will be of this one.   We had lunch at the restaurant at Peggy's Cover out of convenience. The food was decent and the location was great.  We were able to get a table right away; there was a long line when we left.
Lunenberg
This is a very cute, pretty town with a lot of colour.  The pictures with the houses that are all different colours is usually from this town.  We walked around the town for a few hours and we really enjoyed it.  Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mahone Bay
This is a very cute town. It reminds of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. This is I picture most small towns to be like. We visited some small boutique shops by the water and there was a lot of knick knacks that would be great for gifts.  We didn't get a chance to stop there but apparently Rebecca's makes a delicious lobster grilled cheese.
What to Do
Take a stroll along the Boardwalk
Citadel
Halifax Public Gardens
Brewery tour at Alexander Keith's
What to Eat
The Bicycle Thief
Shige Sushi
2 Doors Down - Best Smokehouse Burger
Press Gang - Fresh Oysters
