Los Angeles, California

I love California.  The weather is nice, there's so much to do and people are nice. However, I think everyone has figured this out as well which is why the traffic is horrendous. As much as I love it there; I always recall spending a lot of time in the car whenever I visit. I highly recommend you stay in areas that you plan on doing a lot of things or else you'll be spending lots of time in the car as well. Not commuting during rush hour helps but it's just generally busy all the time.

We were fortunate to have friends that were getting married in Hawaii and we got to share their special day with them. They got married at Halekulani and it was a beautiful ceremony and reception.  We rented a car and was able to drive around the island and we would recommend this if you've never been before. What to Do
Spend some time at the beach.

I would rate this hike as an easier-medium. There were people hiking with their dogs.  It was worth the hike; one of the nicest hikes I've ever been on. The hike took us about an hour for the round trip.

Las Vegas, Nevada

I've been to Vegas more than ten times and can assure you that every trip is very different. I've gone on trips with the family which was very touristy with lots of sightseeing. I've gone on girl trips which include a lot of  shopping. My favourite trips have been with just the hubby.  We walk around and grab some good eats and just do whatever it is we feel like without having to wait for anyone.  People are always asking me what they would do in Vegas if they don't drink or gamble.  I don't really gamble and I'm not a big drinker and I'm able to have a good time. It's not for everyone but I like Vegas because it's a low-stress trip. You don't have to plan anything and you don't have to rent a car if you stay on the main strip. Below is a list of things I did and ate over all of my trips. It would be impossible to do all of that in one trip. There are still a ton of things that I have not explored in Las Vegas especially things that are off the strip such as museums.  Viva Las Vegas!

Portland, Oregon

We have always wanted to visit Portland to visit their food scene.  We took my sister here to celebrate her 30th birthday.   We really enjoyed the city and all that it had to offer and we will definitely visit again.

Bun Bo Hue - Authentic food in a hole in the wall
Cartlandia - a lot of the carts are closed on the weekend
Pok Pok - I just recommend Ike's fish sauce chicken wings. We tried several other dishes and they were just alright.  The Thai food at the food trucks were more flavourful.
Multnomah Whiskey Library - We had a group of 6 and we were told the wait could be 1 to 3 hours. We put our name on the list and headed to another cocktail bar and we got a call about 20 minutes later they gave us a call. The drinks were excellent. They really enjoyed the old-fashioned. This is also the place where Ben took Lauren on a date on the Bachelor.
Swine Whiskey Bar - We came here to have a drink while we waited for a table at Multnomah Whisky Library.  While we were waiting for service at this place, Multnomah called us to let us know our table was ready. I've read great things about this spot and it was busy so we would definitely try to visit on our next trip.
Nong's Khao Man Gai -  Khao Man Gai - It was closed on the weekend so we didn't get a chance to try it.
Luc Lac - Vietnamese food - You order and pay for your food first  and then you'll be seated.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I got the pleasure of accompanying my husband on a work trip to Mexico in the middle of November. I was really looking forward to some rest and relaxation.  This was our first time doing a 7 day all-inclusive trip which we knew would be interesting since I'm not very good about doing nothing on vacation.  I knew it would be a fun trip nonetheless. My conclusion is that seven day all-inclusive trips are not for us.  By the forth day, we were ready to go home. We think all-inclusive's are great for people who like to lay around the pool and the beach or families. We found that we were pretty bored a lot of the time and we had to go really far to find any activities.  Puerto Vallarta was very nice and it felt less touristy than Cancun.  However, Cancun had beautiful nice sandy beaches.  Puerto Vallarta was a decent flight from Calgary and the prices are very reasonable.
Resort
The Royal Suites Punta Mita by Palladium (Grand Palladium) -  This was the adult only side
This resort is located in Nayarit, Mexico.  The airport was about a 25-30 minute drive from the airport.  The staff at this hotel was spectacular. From the moment we arrived; the service was all top-notch.  The staff was very nice and they did go out of their way to make sure we were having a good time. The food on the resort was just alright.  The resort was definitely older then we had expected.  The rooms were clean and the room service was pretty timely and we always got our food.  My only complaint about the resort was how long it took for them to clean our rooms each day. They always tend to clean it between 1 and 3 for us which is usually when we come back from an activity.  I would recommend staying on this side if you want a non-busy stay. There was always a beach chair, a seat at the side bar, a seat at the restaurant and excellent service by the pool.
Spa
If you are staying on the royal suites side, you get to use the spa facilities for free (other guests have to pay $10 per use).  There's a cold tub, hot tub, swimming pool and a sauna which is shared for males and females.  We had a couples massage while we were there and it was fantastic.  You can book this when you arrive; there wasn't a need to book in advance. For the males that are tall, the robes are short; keep that in mind if you plan on sitting.

ATV & Ziplining
The travel company (Metracon Travel Group) for our group arranged the excursions.  I really enjoyed the activities because it got us out of the resort.  It was my first time ATVing so I had a lot of fun. For experienced ATVers this excursion is pretty boring since you follow everyone in a straight line. It would have been better if they split our large group into two groups (experienced versus new) and took us separately. The ziplining was fun but there were 10 lines and by the 7th one; we just wanted to be done with it. There is one zipline that is over 1km long which was pretty cool. Wear proper shoes if you plan to zipline; there is certain parts that you will have to hike.
Sayulita
This is a great surfer town.  There are a lot of boutique shops (handbags and souvenirs) and a lot of restaurants including a really nice beach. This was about a 30 minute cab ride from the resort that we stayed at.
We had lunch at
Barracuda and it was great - especially the cold beers.  We had the ceviche, marlin fish tacos and shrimp tacos and they were excellent.  A lot of the others that we traveled with preferred the food in Sayulita over the food in the resort.
Puerto Vallarta
We took a cab into the city on one of the nights we had free. We went between 5 and 6 pm which was during rush hour. Avoid going at this time if you can to not be stuck in traffic; a 40 minute drive turned into 1.5 hours.  It was nice to visit the city and walk around the markets and the boardwalk.  We're glad we got to see what the city was like.  We went to Pipi's for dinner. The portions were huge and the restaurant is very festive.  The food was just alright; I felt it geared more towards tourists versus serving authentic Mexican food.

Southern USA Trip

Ever since I watched the movie "Chef" starring Jon Favreau, I've always wanted to take a trip to New Orleans and go to Cafe Du Monde.  Fortunately, I was able to make it happen. I pulled out a map and decided that travelling to some other cities that were close by would make the trip more worthwhile and I also get to check them off my bucket list.  Our trip started off with Nashville, TN, then we drove to Atlanta, GA, followed with driving to New Orleans and we ended the trip with a flight back to Dallas, TX.   We wanted this trip to be a little bit of learning about history as well as enjoying some attractions that these cities are known for.
2016

Dallas, TX

Hotel
We stayed at Le Meridian at the Galleria and it was in a good location and had very spacious rooms that were probably more suites. We would stay here again.
What to Do
Dealy Plaza - Site of JFK's assassination
Shopping - there are two premium outlets
Reunion Tower
A T & T Stadium - Dallas Cowboys
What to Eat
Pecan Lodge - A top barbeque joint and was featured on the Food Network.  There was a huge line an hour before the place even opened.  There's a second line inside the restaurant if you order in bulk (5lbs or more); you do just bypass everyone and walk in and join that other line.  You can also skip the line if you come in and are able to get a seat at the bar. They are strict here; you cannot save a table until you have a receipt from ordering food.
Boiling Crab - There is a long wait but it worth it.  The seafood boil eaten on a table was excellent. They were out of the oysters when we were there but we heard great things about the oysters.
Wabi House - Garlic Ramen was delicious
Fuel City - Tacos - the beef ones were our favourite. Make sure to go to the food cart beside it to pick up some Mexican corn.

Harrah's Casino - there is also an Acme here that has a limited menu
Swamp Tour - We did one and  we personally found it really boring.
Oak Alley Plantation Tour - ($18 without transportation) - Highly recommended
Oak Alley was great and it was my favourite part of New Orleans. It is about an hour drive from French Quarter  and it was worth it.  The admission fee includes the tour of the house.  The tour was great and you get to learn a lot about the history of New Orleans as well as the plantations.  They had rebuilt the homes that the slaves were required to live in.  I felt this visit reminds me of all the changes that have happened since that time but that there is also a lot of room for improvement for equality for all mankind.

Atlanta, GA

My trip to Atlanta was a lot more fulfilling than I expected.  The Centre of Civil and Human Rights visit was a very enlightening learning experience. I highly recommend everyone to visit this place.  It is a part of history that everything should learn from so that mistakes do not repeated. It is especially important right now with everything going on in the United States election and the #blacklivesmatter movement.  There is something for everyone to learn and understand in every culture and always reminds me of this quote:
"We may have all come on difference ships, but we're in the same boat now."

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville was always known as a famous music city for me. I knew there was a Country Music Hall of Fame that I wanted to visit.  It is also known for its venues with live music.  We did try to visit Bluebird which is known for having many famous singer drop ins. Unfortunately, the venue only holds approximately 80 people and we showed up about 15 minutes before it opened there was probably already 120 people in line.  Even though we did not make the cut off to get in, they do allow you to go inside and take pictures if you would like.
Unfortunately for me I was sick most of this trip so I couldn't enjoy the vacation as much as I would of liked. Drinking alcohol when you're sick does not help your body heal. I tried it, it doesn't work.  Visiting Honky Tonk was not what I expected.  It was extremely crowded with lots of dive bars with music blasting.  We had a bigger group since there was 6 of us so we went to The Stillery for some great live music and some grub.  I recommend if it you are looking for a place that's casual with good grub and great live music that isn't a bar scene.
What to Do
Country Music Hall of Fame - They had some pretty cool items in this museum but there wasn't as much artifacts as I expected except for the guitar collection.

Cancun, Mexico

We have not been on an all-inclusive vacation before and since our cousins were going with their kids,  we thought we would take this opportunity to give it a try join them. We traveled to Cancun on a Saturday and the congestion at the airport took approximately 3 hours to go through customs and leave the airport.  We would not recommend arriving on a Friday or Saturday.  We were told by other travellers that this was unusually busy and it's not like this on the weekdays.   We stayed at Paradisus Cancun which is an all-inclusive five star resort.  We would recommend this hotel, the service was impeccable.   The meals were all decent and the buffet had a good selection.  My favourite restaurant at the resort was Blue Agave for the tacos.  We booked with WestJet Vacations so the shuttle to the hotel was included.   You don't have to plan anything in advance if you're staying at this hotel; you can book tours and excursions when you arrive at the hotel. Overall, it was a very relaxing vacation; we were too relaxed and actually got quite bored after two days.  We have decided that an all-inclusive vacation is just not our thing.  We would be willing to go back to an all-inclusive vacation if there was a wedding, group of friends, or a family vacation.  The all-inclusive is an excellent option for travelers that don't like to plan and just want to relax.
What to Do
Excursion
We booked a private shuttle with Happy Shuttle for under $500 USD for 4 adults and 2 kids  (includes lunch and bottles of water) to visit Chichen Itza and Il Kil Cenote and tours of other cities in Mexico.  We had the shuttle for 10 hours and we were able to beat all the tour buses to the attractions.
Chichen Itza - Yucatan, Mexico - MUST SEE - approximately 2 hour trip from Cancun
Il Kil Cenote - Don't forget your bathing suit if you want to go for a swim.

New York, New York

Where to Stay
This totally depends on what you plan on doing for your trip.  My last trip I stayed in East Village which was great. It was close to all of the good food spots and there was lots of places close by to grab a drink.  I usually avoid the touristy areas such as Times Square since I'm not a fan of the crowds and the hotel rooms are extremely expensive.  A lot of friends have stayed in Brooklyn and they quite enjoyed it.  I would recommend planning a couple of places you want to visit and find a place to stay that's near there.
